In Fenelon Falls, Ontario, the Fenelon River still flows over a natural waterfall, despite the heavy hand of human alterations on the waterway. This is home to Lock 34 of the Trent Severn Waterway, connecting Cameron Lake to the west to Sturgeon Lake to the east.
The town of 2,500 residents has a much larger population during the summer months as a top tourist destination in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario. Incorporated in 1874, the Victoria Railway came to town two years later. Trains stopped in 1980 and the tracks were removed in 1984. The rail bed is used year-round as a recreational trail running from Lindsay to Haliburton.
The locks are always busy during the summer months with boaters on the Trent Severn and sight-seers. The lift is quite high at 7.2 metres or 24 feet. Just around the bend on Cameron Lake is a nice beach for swimming on those hot summer days.
